How To Successfully Grow Pecan Seedlings Using A Container

by Lauren

If you are looking to successfully grow pecan seedlings, you need proper research on the right temperature, soil conditions and any other factors that may hamper proper growth of the pecan trees. If all the research is carefully noted, you are ready to grow pecan seedlings. Note that, there are a myriad of ways of growing pecan seedlings so choose whatever method is more suitable to you. Below is one highlighted method of growing pecan seedlings successfully using containers.

How To Grow Pecan Seedlings

pecan tree care1. For the pecan seedlings to grow successfully, they need to be stored in moist or cold conditions (a process referred to as stratification). This guarantees uniformity during the germination process. You can choose however long you prefer for the stratification process.

2. Remember, a pecan seedling must absorb lots of water which swells up the kernel and helps the shell to crack open. Once the seedling starts germinating, it forms a tap root followed by a wiry root which grows upwards above the soil. Naturally, a pecan tree has very strong tap roots which would easily replace the parts above ground in cases of natural catastrophes such as floods, animals or fires.

3. Therefore, in order to meet this requirement of pecan seedlings, you should consider planting them in a bottomless container that will essentially allow the tap root to grow naturally as it should. Planting the seedlings in a closed bottom pot is not advised because once the tap root reaches the bottom, it turns sideways rather than growing downwards and circle the bottom. This is characterized by poor growth of the pecan tree and unsubstantial long term performance since the tap root is the main reason why the parts above ground thrive accordingly.

4. While choosing the perfect container for planting pecan seedlings, you should consider how large pecan trees can germinate and also they should meet the tap root requirement. In most cases, open bottom containers have a covering at the bottom that allows the container to hold all the contents of the pot in place and allow for proper germination of the tap root. Once the tap root reaches the bottom, lateral roots extend promoting proper growth of the pecan tree altogether.

5. Pecan seedlings also require the right type of soil mix for proper growth. You can either use commercially available products or simply mix the soil yourself. Whatever the case, make sure the soil has all the proper ingredients to promote proper germination and long term performance of the pecan seedlings.

6. The last procedure involves proper watering of the seedlings. Depending on the type of container used for the germination process, you can either choose to water the plants daily or as required.

7. For proper growth, make sure the containers are not placed in direct sunlight. Also during summer, make sure there is proper air circulation to provide the temperature suitable for germination. The best way to achieve this is to place the containers under large trees that provide enough shade to curb the summer heat.
